Rory’s Story Cubes BATMAN: Let the storytelling begin!

Rorys Story Cubes BatmanA few of my really good friends are total comic book junkies and because of that I’ve been to pretty much every comic book movie that has come out in the last decade – most of the time it’s the midnight showing. So when a package arrived with the new Rory’s Story Cubes: Batman, I was geeked!

How to Play

Just like classic Rory’s Story Cubes, you’re taking turns being the narrator and you create a story using the nine dice. Only this time Batman is going to be taking center stage!  To play in a group, give people 3 dice and let them tell their portion before saying something like “meanwhile…” or “on the other side of town…” and passing the story on to the next narrator. You can also play solo and write down or illustrate your story.

Story Cubes Batman indexOkay, so let’s say that your kid is a huge Batman fan and all you really are sure of is that Batman is a man that dresses up as a bat. No problem!  You’ve got a few things going for you:

  1. There are no wrong answers – the Riddler could totally be a guy at an information kiosk.
  2. Many of the icons are places and things and even the specific ones, like Wayne Manor, could represent a mansion or castle.
  3. There’s an icon guide you can read ahead of time if you want to look like you know what you’re talking about.

My Thoughts

Overall, I like Rory’s Story Cubes. I think it’s a great exercise in creative storytelling for kids of all ages. Now that there’s a Batman version, I’m sure there are plenty of superhero-loving kids (and adults) who are going to come up with their hero’s next great adventure.

Oh and if you really want to bring your storytelling “A” game — mix in some of the dice from the Original, Actions, or Voyages sets.  You can actually buy all three sets at Amazon for a nice discount if you’re going to come up your own long trade paperback worth of story material.
